UK Hydrographic Office

Construction work began in 2017 on the new UK Hydrographic headquarters in Taunton, with Taunton Fabrications the obvious choice as sub-contract specialist for the supply of specialist structural steelwork and architectural metalwork.

About the Project

The UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is recognised by shipping companies throughout the world as the leading global authority and publisher of oceanography charts.

Taunton Fabrications were delighted to have been awarded the structural steelwork and architectural metalwork package for this project, which included delivering an impressive 120 tonne structural steel façade. The interior called for generous staircases, open balconies and wide bridges. This created a physical and visual connection between all parts of the building, giving an impressive sense of openness, which followed a theme of ‘Seabed to Surface’ with images of strata, contours and water currents influencing the aesthetic design throughout.

The building was officially handed over in January 2019 - exactly three years since the initial design work began in 2016.
